RATIONALE OF REFORMED EDUCATION
AT THE JOHN CALVIN SCHOOLS
SUMMARY:
The mandate for the education at the John Calvin Schools is derived from the divine mandate given to parents to bring up their children in the fear of the Lord. This mandate has its origin in the Word of God, which emphasises throughout the necessity and importance of this task.
Based on this mandate, the general aim of education at the John Calvin Schools can be described as follows:
"Education at a Reformed School must, as integral part of the instruction of the covenant children and in subjection to the Word of God, help to optimally equip them for their service to God and to their neighbour.”
The John Calvin Schools subscribe to the view that learning means the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom and the development of skills, as espoused in the Bible.
The curriculum of the schools is constructed and will be taught in obedience to the Holy Scriptures, as summarized in the Three Forms of Unity. It will be structured in accordance with the requirements of the state education authority of Western Australia.
A learning environment which supports such learning must include the physical environment of the classroom and the school, the place and function of God’s Word, prayer and singing, as well as the need for order and discipline.
The function of this document is to set out the basis for all activity at the JohnCalvinSchool. It acquaints all those who are involved at the school with the motivation for having a Reformed School and it gives direction to the character of the education provided at the school. It provides a base for ongoing discussion and for further curriculum work, and a benchmark for school evaluation.
